I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), having received a Masters in Social Work degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982.
After two years of undergraduate work at Duke (1971-73), I became clearer on what I wanted to do with my life and knew there was a better school to orient me toward a career in therapy. I finished my undergraduate work at Pitzer College in Claremont, California and worked for a mental health clinic in Ontario, California until 1978. For most of my career, I split my time between private practice and public clinic work.
I served as President of the American Academy of Psychotherapists from 2018 to 2020. AAP has been a source of great inspiration and renewal for me. See our website at www.aapweb.com for more of a sense of my professional context.
I continue to find great fascination and joy in this work and, though I have been at it quite a while, I have no intention of retiring.
